How to vote in the 2026 Municipal Election

Voting day is Monday, October 26, 2026. Polls are open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Key dates

Can you vote?

You are eligible if you are:

  • a Canadian citizen

  • 18 or older on voting day

  • a resident of Waterloo, or an owner or tenant of property in Waterloo, or the spouse of an owner or tenant

  • not prohibited from voting under any law

You vote for the council seat in the ward where you live. If you are not sure which ward that is, the city has an address lookup and ward map.

You cannot vote if you are serving a sentence in a correctional institution, if you are a corporation, or if you are casting a ballot on someone else's behalf without being an authorized proxy under the Municipal Elections Act.

Post-secondary students. If you are living in Waterloo to attend school and intend to return home afterward, you can vote both here and in your home municipality. Make sure your Waterloo address is on the voters' list.

No fixed address. You do not need a permanent address to vote. Your voting address is the place in Waterloo you have most often returned to sleep or eat during the five weeks before you vote. If your ID does not show that address, election staff will help you sign a declaration at the voting location.

Get on the voters' list

Elections Ontario maintains the list. Check that your name and address are right, especially if you have moved, changed your name, or are voting for the first time.

Vote in advance

Any eligible Waterloo voter can use any of these locations, regardless of ward.

Accessible voting equipment is available at every advance location, along with ASL and multilingual online interpretation.

Vote on election day

Polls run 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Your voting location will be listed on the voter notification card mailed in September, and on the city's election page closer to the date.

Bring identification

You need one piece of ID showing your name and current Waterloo address. Schedule 1 of Ontario Regulation 304/13 lists 29 accepted documents, including an Ontario driver's license, Ontario photo card, photo health card, utility bill, bank or credit card statement, lease, pay stub, property tax assessment, and a campus residence document from your school.

If your ID does not show your current address, you can complete a declaration form at your voting location.

Accessibility

All voting locations have accessible entrances and parking, and service animals are welcome. Accessible voting equipment will be available at a designated location during advance voting and on voting day. Election staff can assist if you need help.
